The short version
We promise to treat you and your data the way we want ours treated.
- Privacy is the default. Your precise position never leaves your phone. The settings that govern what the app sends and stores are on the first screen you see, and you can change them at any time.
- Your position is never sent. Everything drawn over the camera — which peaks are in view, the shape of the horizon — is computed on your phone from map tiles stored on it. Downloading those tiles names the map squares the app needs, about 100 km on a side, fetched in a spiral starting at your current location, so our server learns roughly where you are, to about the nearest hundred kilometers, and nothing finer. No account, no name, no email, no device identifier, no advertising identifier.
- Our server unavoidably sees your IP address when the app downloads, as every server does. We do not use it to identify you, and it lives only in short-lived logs kept for keeping the service running.
- Downloads can be turned down. The Wi-Fi only switch keeps them off mobile data, the storage budget bounds what they keep, and buying the terrain for where you are going before you leave means the app needs no signal at all once you are there.
- Signing in is optional, and nothing requires it. Every feature works without an account. If you sign in with Google, Apple, or Facebook, we store which provider you used and the anonymous identifier it assigns you for our app — no name, no email address, no photo — plus your purchases as Google Play reports them, the map squares you have spent credits on, and, if you turn on settings sync, your settings. Signing in exists so purchases follow you to a new phone. Deleting the account removes all of it.
- No advertising, no trackers, no analytics you did not ask for, and we never sell or share your data. Not with partners, not with brokers, not with anyone.
- A peak's photograph comes from Wikimedia Commons. Opening one loads the picture from Wikimedia, so your phone contacts them and they see its network address, the same as visiting any web page. Your position is never part of that request, and a peak with no photograph contacts nobody.
- The compass is for reference, not navigation. Phone sensors can be wrong by tens of degrees near metal or magnets. Enjoy it, and carry a real one where a direction matters.
- The camera stays on your phone. The lens view is drawn over the camera preview; no image is uploaded or stored unless you take a picture, and then it is stored only on your device.
- Your data is yours. Everything the app keeps lives on your device. Delete the app and it is gone.
- Elevation data comes from the Copernicus DEM. Produced using Copernicus WorldDEM-30 © DLR e.V. 2010-2014 and © Airbus Defence and Space GmbH 2014-2018 provided under COPERNICUS by the European Union and ESA; all rights reserved.
Terms of Service
1. Agreement
These terms are an agreement between you and Rogue Tinkerer, LLC ("we", "us") covering the ARidade application (the "App") and the GeoAlchemy terrain service it may connect to (the "Service"). By installing or using the App you accept these terms. If you do not accept them, please do not use the App.
2. What the App does
The App shows the names and positions of terrain features, such as mountain summits, over your phone's camera view, using your device's location and orientation sensors and elevation data stored on your device. Your position is processed on the device and is never sent to the Service.
3. Downloads
The Service delivers map tiles and feature data to the App. A download names the map squares the App asks for; by accepting these terms you agree that the App downloads the squares around your current location as you move, as described in the Privacy Policy below. The Wi-Fi only setting keeps downloads off mobile data. The Service is provided on an as-available basis; we may limit, suspend, or discontinue it at any time, and terrain already on your device keeps working without it.
4. Purchases and accounts
Offline terrain is bought with credits. Credit packs are sold through Google Play and are subject to Google Play's terms, including its refund policy. Credits are spent on map squares, and a square you have bought stays yours for as long as we make the data available. We do not receive or store your payment details.
An account is optional and is never required to use the App. Signing in records your purchases and the squares you own against the account, which is how they follow you to a new phone. What an account stores, and how to delete it, is described in the Privacy Policy below.
5. Elevation data and attribution
Elevation data is derived from the Copernicus DEM, provided under the Copernicus programme of the European Union and the European Space Agency. The following notice applies to it and to anything derived from it, including data downloaded to your device: "Produced using Copernicus WorldDEM-30 © DLR e.V. 2010-2014 and © Airbus Defence and Space GmbH 2014-2018 provided under COPERNICUS by the European Union and ESA; all rights reserved." Feature names and positions are derived from GeoNames under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence.
6. Not for navigation or safety
The App is an educational and recreational aid. Sensor readings, elevation data, and the App's calculations all carry error, and the App may misidentify, misplace, or omit features. Do not rely on the App for navigation, route finding, avalanche or terrain-hazard assessment, aviation, or any purpose where an error could lead to injury, loss, or damage. Carry and know how to use appropriate navigation tools.
In particular, the compass and every heading the App shows are derived from your phone's sensors, which can be wrong by tens of degrees near metal, magnets, or vehicles and can drift without warning. They are offered as a reference and a novelty, not as a navigation instrument. If a direction matters, use a real compass or a map.
7. Acceptable use
You agree not to interfere with the Service, to access it by automated means at a rate beyond ordinary use of the App, to attempt to circumvent purchase controls, or to redistribute data downloaded through the App except as the Copernicus and GeoNames licences permit.
8. Intellectual property
The App, its design, and its software are ours or our licensors' and are protected by copyright. We grant you a personal, non-transferable, non-exclusive licence to use the App on devices you own or control. Third-party components are licensed under their own terms, listed in the App.
9. Disclaimer of warranties
The App and the Service are provided "as is" and "as available", without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, and non-infringement. Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of implied warranties, so some of these exclusions may not apply to you.
10. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, profits, or goodwill, arising from your use of or inability to use the App or the Service. Our total liability for any claim arising from the App or the Service is limited to the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim arose. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law.
11. Termination
You may stop using the App at any time by deleting it. We may suspend or terminate access to the Service for a breach of these terms. Sections 5, 6, 9, 10, and 13 survive termination.
12. Changes
We may update these terms. Material changes will be announced in the App before they take effect. Continuing to use the App after a change takes effect means you accept the updated terms.
13. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Colorado, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute will be brought in the state or federal courts located in Colorado, and you consent to their jurisdiction, except that either party may seek injunctive relief in any court of competent jurisdiction.

Privacy Policy
1. Who we are
Rogue Tinkerer, LLC is the data controller for any personal data processed by the App and the Service. Contact details are in section 14 of the Terms above.
2. What we process, and why
- Your IP address, when the App downloads
- Received by our server with every request, as with any internet service. Purpose: operating and securing the Service. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in keeping the Service running. Retained in server logs for no more than [30] days and not used to identify you.
- Purchase records
- Google Play processes payments and provides us with a purchase token to confirm your entitlement. We do not receive your name, address, or payment details. Legal basis: performance of a contract.
- An account, only if you sign in
- Which provider you used (Google, Apple, or Facebook) and the opaque identifier that provider assigns you for our app; a random account id we generate; your purchases as Google Play reports them; the names of the map squares you have spent credits on; and, if you turn on settings sync, the settings the app uploads, which the service stores without reading. Nothing else the provider offers is read or kept: no email address, no name, no photo, no contacts. Purpose: letting purchases and settings follow you to a new phone. Legal basis: performance of a contract. Deleting the account removes all of it.
- The map squares you download
- A download request names the squares you asked for, which our server needs in order to send them. The automatic download keeps the squares around your current position fetched as you move, so those requests name roughly where you are, to about the nearest hundred kilometers, for as long as it is allowed to run. Purpose: delivering the data you asked for. Legal basis: performance of a contract.
- Data that never leaves your device
- Your position history, sensor readings, camera images, downloaded terrain data, and settings (unless you turn on settings sync) are stored and processed only on your device. We have no access to them.
3. What we do not do
We do not run advertising or advertising identifiers, do not include third-party analytics or tracking libraries, do not build profiles, and do not sell, rent, or share personal data with third parties for their own purposes.
4. Sharing
The Service runs on infrastructure we operate or rent from hosting providers acting on our instructions under data-processing terms. We may disclose data if required by law.
One other recipient exists. A peak's page shows a photograph hosted by Wikimedia Commons, and your device fetches that picture from Wikimedia directly, so Wikimedia receives its network address and the name of the file requested. We send them nothing, and your position is never part of the request. Wikimedia's own privacy policy governs what they do with it.
5. International transfers
The Service is operated from the United States. If you use it from elsewhere, your IP address and the names of the map squares you download are processed in the United States under the safeguards described here.
6. Retention
IP addresses: server logs, at most [30] days. Purchase tokens: for as long as your entitlement lasts, plus any period required by tax and accounting law. Account data: until you delete the account.
7. Your rights
Depending on where you live you may have rights to access, correct, delete, restrict, or port personal data, to object to processing, and to complain to a supervisory authority. Because we hold almost nothing about you and cannot link what we hold to you, most requests are satisfied by the design itself; write to us at the contact address and we will help with the rest. The settings that govern downloads are on the first screen the App shows and in its Settings.
Deleting your account removes the account, your purchase history, the squares you own, and any synced settings in one step. Until in-app deletion ships for Google and Apple sign-in, email us at the contact address and we will delete the account by hand. If you signed in with Facebook, removing the app from your Facebook account triggers the same deletion through Facebook's own process.
8. Children
The App is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from them.
9. Security
Traffic between the App and the Service is encrypted in transit. Downloaded data is verified against a checksum before use.
10. Changes
We will announce material changes to this policy in the App before they take effect and record the date of the current version at the top of this page.
